Peter cutting dovetails PETER LLOYD

Peter Lloyd is firmly established as one of the country's foremost boxmakers, although his path to becoming a craftsman started as an air traffic control assistant at Heathrow and progressed through such diverse fields as hotel and catering management and a job as bench joiner. Having worked for some years as a secondary teacher in Cumbria, Peter then took up a two year teaching contract in Botswana, but on returning to Cumbria was determined to be his own boss.

Working from his small workshop in Cumbria, he searches out unusual and beautiful English hardwoods to create jewellery chests, work boxes, writing slopes or special commissions; a box to hold a treasured heirloom, a christening box, a chess set or a presentation piece.Stationery box in English yew

Each finished box is a celebration of its wood and is unique. It arises from a careful study of the shape and figure of the wood and reflects a balance between the needs of the design and the natural qualities of the material.

The excitement and enthusiasm with which he creates his gorgeous pieces is self-evident. As well as several solo exhibitions in Europe, his work has been exhibited in some of the best galleries in the UK.  He has been commissioned to make boxes for special occasions or to contain something special, and several times from wood taken from the customer's own tree.Jewellery box in ripple sycamore.  He has even made a box with seventeenth century wood from the Bodleian library in Oxford and is currently working on a limited edition of boxes from oak taken from HMS Victory.
