Inspired by the unusual and striking English hardwoods he continuously seeks, he has a passion for boxes. Working from his small workshop in Cumbria, he searches out unusual and beautiful English hardwoods to create jewellery chests, work boxes, writing slopes or special commissions; a box to hold a treasured heirloom, a christening box, a chess set or a presentation piece.
Each finished box is a celebration of its wood and is unique. It arises from a careful study of the shape and figure of the wood and reflects a balance between the needs of the design and the natural qualities of the material.
The excitement and enthusiasm with which he creates his gorgeous pieces is self-evident. As well as several solo exhibitions in Europe, his work has been exhibited in some of the best galleries in the UK. He has been commissioned to make boxes for special occasions or to contain something special, and several times from wood taken from the customer's own tree. He has even made a box with seventeenth century wood from the Bodleian library in Oxford and is currently working on a limited edition of boxes from oak taken from HMS Victory.
