What is Wealden?

Wealden Tool Company is named after the Weald, an area in Kent where our company was founded, and is still based. The Weald is an area covering parts of Kent, Sussex and a small part of Surrey, framed by the chalk of the North and South downs.

Geologically the formation of this area started about 135 million years ago as a large freshwater lake fed by rivers, which carried silt and rock fragments to lay down the sands and Wealden clays we see today. The sea broke through into this lake after about 20 million years and more deposits were laid down, forming the gault clay and greensand ridges. A climatic change occurred during the next 30 million years, becoming warmer and drier, and the large shallow sea allowed the formation of an extensive chalk deposit from the minute marine life.

A gradual folding and uplift of this area occurred some 70 million years ago, forming a dome of chalk that rose from the sea at its greatest height in the central Weald. Rivers, wind and geological action gradually eroded the highest central area leaving the sand ridges and flat expanses of clay exposed. This action left a large central Weald area ringed by the steep chalk slopes of the downs.

An extensive forest developed in the rich clays and silts and this proved practically impenetrable for early man, with most settlements being on the higher tops of the Downs. The Saxons and Kentish jutes called this immense wooded area the ‘Weald', a word similar to ‘Wald', the German word for forest.

Over the past 2000 years or so, a gradual clearance of land occurred in the Weald, notably when the better land on its fringes ran out around the tenth century. This process of land clearance, along with the use of the forest for feeding pigs, has created today a countryside of enchanting villages, splendid mansions, rich farms, orchards and hop gardens with conical oast-houses.

The oaks which built the British Navy grew here and charcoal burners also felled them to smelt the Sussex iron. Gunpowder mills were set up in lonely wooded valleys, giving rise to the many hammer ponds, surviving today, which drove the water-wheels of forges and powder mills. Some of the ancient forest magic still lingers in the Wealden forests of St Leonards and Ashdown, where herds of deer roam wild.
